Sunrise
by Tamir Buchshtav

It was dark in those days
Of eternal night,
And the earth torn apart by war.
For down from the mountains,
They came to hunt,
And we were the chosen prey.

In the darkness they came
From their mountain holds,
The night was their ally and friend.
And we couldn’t defeat them,
We couldn’t win,
We were pushed back, surrounded, and slain.

Chorus:
For the sun never rose from the eastern shore,
And the world was enshrouded by night.
For the sun never shone upon earth’s bloody fields,
And the dark was their ally and friend.

In a tower of stone,
In a far away hill,
They gathered in secret and haste,
The greatest of wizards,
The wisest of men,
To protect the remains of our kind.

For a week and a day,
The wise ones debated,
And none could offer a way,
To defend men from darkness,
To defeat our foes,
To win this war once and for all.

Chorus

Then she spoke, and they listened,
In silence and awe,
For she was the wisest of all.
Aged beyond counting,
For the first time, she spoke.
Explaining her desperate plan.

They fought and they argued,
Denying the need,
There must be a different way, claimed.
But they could not find another,
There was no other way,
And at last, they agreed to her say.

Chorus

They attacked in the darkness,
As was ever their way,
They surrounded the council of Man.
The wise ones’ protectors
Fought valiantly,
But they all knew that they couldn’t win

In the high council’s chambers,
The wizards worked,
On the last final desperate spell,
In a race against time,
In a race against war,
Before the stone tower was breached.

Chorus

They killed the defenders,
And they went up the stairs,
And they smashed down the chamber door.
And they saw there the wizards,
All sprawled on the floor,
With not even a spark of life

Then from the sea in the east,
Came the first light of dawn,
And the sun’s rays were blinding and fierce,
And they burned down to ashes,
All over the world,
Torn apart by the council’s last spell.

And she rose the next morning,
And the next one as well,
And whenever they felt her, they burned,
To this day it protects us,
The wizards last will,
For us they have given their lives.

And the sun rose that day from the eastern shore,
And she bathed the world with her light.
And the sun rose each day upon earth’s peaceful fields,
And the light was our ally and friend.
