Workaholic's Lament

Workaholic's Lament

Tune: Cynthia McQuilin's "The Mermaid's Lament"

Alone in my office, I'm watching my screen.
The cold, empty darkness awaits me outside,
And I write my frustration where it goes unseen,
For none reads the documents I stay to write.

Many offers I've had to go out on a date
But I've turned them all down and I stayed here late.

I mustn't complain. Oh, my contract is fair:
I get company car, I'm paid more than enough,
When I raise new ideas, my boss listens and cares -
But he's suddenly deaf when I ask for time off.

Many offers…

Oh, what normal girl is not better than I,
Who has time for lovers and leisure and rest,
Who knows leaving work while there's light in the sky
And has pictures of children to smile from her desk?

Many offers…

If I had some sense, I would fly from the scene,
I'd walk every beach, every mall, every park;
But bound by my contract, I'm tied to my screen,
So I sit and I work all alone in the dark.

Many offers…
