Oracle

Tune: Billy Joel's "Piano Man".

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday.
The crowd comes in steady and slow.
There's an old man sitting next to me,
Withered-muscles and eyes that still glow.

He said, "Son, do you know who I used to be?"
And I tell him I can see the past.
He gives me a smile. He'll be pleased for a while,
But I know it's not going to last.

Tell us the future now, Oracle,
Tell us the things you can see,
For life is too short and too brutal
And we need to know what's gonna be.

There's a kid at the bar who's a Telepath,
Who won't raise his eyes from the floor.
He looks older than me, though I'm past forty-three
And just last week he turned twenty-four.

He told me once, "Bill, this is killing me,"
And I didn't quite know what to say.
Now he's sitting alone, and he's quiet and stoned,
And his future just goes on that way.

Tell us the future…

Now Jim comes in regular every week
And he drinks till he's too pissed to stand.
He's a Seer as well, but his life is just hell,
For he knows what his own future plans.

And he can't sleep at night for the knowing,
It's long eaten away at his health;
It's a terrible curse, but it's not any worse
Than the nothing I see for myself.

Tell us the future…

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday,
And the manager smiles like a shark.
People with Powers pay handsomely
To drink themselves numb in the dark.

'Cause no place is a good place for Seers,
Or for old Supers fallen from grace;
I don't come here to drink, I just sit here and think,
Why the hell do I come to this place?

Tell us the future…
