Spin the Straw

נובמבר 18th, 2009 by Dana
Spin the Straw

A translation of my own song, טווי את התבן. TTTO "טווי את הצמר", itself a translation to Hebrew of a French song called "File la Laine".

In your room atop the tower, you have sat and spun for years.
Beggars know the tale that happened, it's the gossip of the peers.
You still sit beside the window, and you spin well as you can,
Waiting for the King to visit, waiting for your hopes to end.

Spin the straw finely, dross into gold.
Spin, the King ordered, and you have been told
That gold's very precious, and gold's what you earn.
Spin, for tomorrow, the King will return.

The dwarves will never come again, you really shouldn't even try.
Every single dwarf will know you for a thief who's telling lies.
And for what? The price denied him you yourself will never see.
Your son lives beside the King; You're in the tower by the sea.

Spin the straw finely, dross into gold.
Spin, the King ordered, and you have been told:
"If you cannot make it, make sure that you learn!"
Spin, for tomorrow, the King will return.

War or peace or feast or famine, all those rumors false or true,
You're a prisoner, and all these never meant a thing to you.
You're a Queen, by law and trapping, but you're wishing all the same
For the King to come tomorrow, for if not, will come the flame.

Spin the straw finely, dross into gold.
Spin, the King ordered, and you have been told
That gold's very precious, and gold doesn't burn…
Spin, for tomorrow, the King will return.
