Workaholic's Lament

Tune: Cynthia McQuilin's "The Mermaid's Lament"

Alone in my office, I'm watching my screen.
The cold, empty darkness awaits me outside,
And I write my frustration where it goes unseen,
For none reads the documents I stay to write.

Many offers I've had to go out on a date
But I've turned them all down and I stayed here late.

Zoe's Lament

Zoe's Lament

The following contains SERENITY SPOILERS!!!

So, you can probably guess it's a Firefly filk. Also, ose. I wanted to write something about Kaylee, and then it got warped.
Tune: Original.

I think life is an apple you hold in your hand.
Tell me, isn't is sweet? Tell me, isn't it grand?
But with one careless bite, you might just understand
How life can blow you to shreds.

tShell, Ma Belle

tShell, Ma Belle

Wrote the following during a course about a real-time OS called VxWorks (NASA wrote the Mars Lander with it!). One of my fellow students started singing "tShell, my belle", and I couldn't help but pick up the gauntlet.
Tune: Beatles' "Michelle, Ma Belle"

tShell, ma belle,
Turned my life into a living hell,
My tShell.

tShell, ma belle,
All the other tasks are stuck on PEND,
my tShell.

I need to, I need to, I need to,
I need to get this done.
Can't think of silly puns;
Until I do, my sanity will have to hold up.

tShell, oh well –
Nothing's working so I might as well
Kill tShell.

Reboot, you brute!
I know something rotten is afoot –
To the root!

I killed you, I killed you, I killed you,
And yet you wouldn't die.
I don't know how or why,
So I will press the only key to which you deign to respond
My tShell.

A Screen Too Blue

A Screen Too Blue

Tune: Three Weird Sisters' "A Gown Too Blue"

::sounds of computer loading::

Running at 100% CPU
I test the pitiful programs I do.
Running in debug mode
I try to test my code
Praying to God it'll work.
Breakpoints and debug prints,
Searching for clues and hints,
Hunting the bugs that still lurk.

I suffered from over-confidence;
Thought I could make this work right.
What I wrote yesterday makes no sense;
God, this'll take the whole night!

Swansong

Based on nothing in particular, except that I did think that the notion of an intelligent being sacrificing itself and seeing it as natural was intriguing. Swan (the ship) has an interesting life philosophy… I should write about her some more sometime.
Tune: Original.

Recording

On nickle and titanium you voyaged through the void
And now at last you see your new home's sun.
In this, like all beginnings, something dear will be destroyed.
The parting's pain has only just begun.

Neverfly

Neverfly

I've developed an intensly negative reaction to the "Go-Play-With-Fairies" brand of filk. I mean, I'll enjoy the songs as much as the next person, but I dislike the worldview they portray – "We don't belong, we should run away someplace where we'll be happy". It's annoyingly irresponsible.
Besides, I quite like the idea of growing up.
Tune: Heather Alexander's "Neverland"

הקלטה בביצוע דנה כץ, ללא ליווי.

Once we all were children, and so it was we played,
But then I had to grow up and I left you where you stayed.
I married my dear James, the bravest man I've ever known,
And had my Darling Angela, a daughter of my own.

Lighter than Air

Lighter than Air

Dedicated to everyone out there who knows how hard it is to get a decent bra.
Tune: Catherine Faber's "Song of the Stars"

Some girls wear chain-mail and others wear brass,
Living their life by their sword and their… sass.
But I tell this lesson to all who might care:
While steel's fine for weapons, it doesn't make good underwear.

Middle-Earthly Lotus

Middle-Earthly Lotus

The whole thing about lotus flowers is how they grow in the middle of swamps and yet they're beautiful and pure and stuff.
Orcs… Not so much with the beautiful and pure, admittedly, but the comparison still holds water. Or at least mud.
Tune: Maureen S. O'Brien's "Barrayaran Roses"

We are like the lotus
Rising from the swamp,
Emerging to a life
So filled with strife,
We're thoughtless, dumb and damp.
We were elves, and now we're tainted, soiled;
Orcs are Middle-Earthly lotus,
Born to toil.

Pushing the Message On

Pushing the Message On

It figures that the only Pratchett filk I have written to date is 1. serious-bordering-on-OSE and 2. incomprehensible to anyone who hadn't read a certain Discworld novel ("Going Postal", as it happens – and if you like Pratchett and haven't read it yet, READ IT).
Also, it figures that the people this song relates to are basically the Discworld's equivalent of network programmers. Heh.
Tune: Jordin Kare's "Pushing the Speed of Light"

Now the Grand Trunk stretches across the land
Pushing the message on.
And the towers need every working hand
To push the message on.
And you're far too young, and you're far too bright,
But it's far away and the pay's all right,
So you find yourself spending endless nights
Pushing the message on.

And you've left behind you your childhood's home
To direct the messages' restless roam
As you're pushing the message on.

Flee the Light of Holy Java

יום שני, אוקטובר 20th, 2008
Flee the Light of Holy Java!

Inspired by a moment in the Mage campaign my brother was running — admittedly, it ended up differently (and also included a moment where the vampire told me his age in hexadecimal), but… well.
Tune: "Glory Glory Hallelujah"

I am but a simple programmer, with logic to my mind,
So when I looked back as I walked, I never thought to find
A vampire a-stalkin' me, and closing up behind
To come and suck my blood!
But…
On my Palm there's Holy Java,
Glory to the Holy Java,
With the use of Holy Java
The vampire will be mud!
